A Copernicus Moment

Prior to the contributions of Nicolas Copernicus, the prevailing thought in western civilization is the sun and stars revolved around the Earth. Copernicus’ discovery that the reverse is true [the Earth and planets revolve around the sun], aligned our understanding with the reality that already existed.

As we approached the 2024 Presidential Election, the prevailing narrative presented by Kamala Harris indicated:

  • Donald Trump presents an existential threat to American democracy
  • Donald Trump is a fascist extremist analogous to Adolph Hitler
  • Kamala Harris is the true change candidate who will turn the page from the decade of political divisiveness due to Donald Trump
  • The new Harris administration would fight inflation, make homes affordable, and finally solve the immigration problem in America

As of Friday, November 8th, some ballots are still being counted primarily in western states, but the election results are as follows:

[84% of expected national vote has been counted]

  • Popular Vote:
    • Donald Trump:        73,597,783 [50.7%]
    • Kamala Harris:        69,277,702 [47.7%]
  • Electoral Vote: 270 needed to win
    • Donald Trump:        295 [29 states]
    • Kamala Harris:        226 [19 states + DC]
    • Arizona (11 EV): Votes counted = 78.1%
      • Donald Trump: 52.5%
      • Kamala Harris: 46.5%
    • Nevada (6 EV): Votes counted = 96.1%
      • Donald Trump: 50.7%
      • Kamala Harris: 47.4%
  • 2024 vs. 2020 Voting Trend by State
    • Donald Trump received more votes in 49 of 50 states
    • Donald Trump won Starrs county (Tx) by 16 percentage points, the 1st Republican win in the county since 1896.
  • U.S. Senate
    • Republicans:           53 seats
    • Democrats:             45 seats [+2 leaning democratic]
  • U.S. House [Majority = 218]
    • Republicans: 211 seats; Democrats: 199 seats; Remaining: 25
  • Voting trends by county: Red [right] – REP; Blue [left] – DEM
  • Bottom Line: The most dominant landslide since the 1984.

The American People have spoken by delivering an undeniable mandate for Donald Trump.

The only question remaining is what can the Democratic Party learn from this comprehensive defeat?

Is it reasonable to conclude the majority of voting Americans support the second coming of Hitler?

Is it possible to believe Donald Trump is a threat to democracy when his Presidency is the result of winning highly contested primary and general elections?

Is it possible the American People did not see Kamala Harris as the change candidate because she is the incumbent Vice President who can think of nothing she would do differently than President Biden?

The re-election of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States presents the Democratic Party an opportunity to reconsider the political tactics and narratives thoroughly rejected by a growing number of the American People.

Will the Democratic Party learn the lesson of Copernicus by aligning their tactics and narratives to the new political reality?

Only time will tell.
